GDC 2026 attendance falls to 20,000 as Festival of Gaming rebrand debuts
GDC 2026 hosted 20,000 attendees — down a third from 2025 and matching the last sub-20,000 figure from 2011 — as the conference debuted its Festival of Gaming rebrand and shuttered the North Hall.
Patch notes
GDC 2026 drew 20,000 attendees, down roughly a third from the 2025 edition.
Expo floor exhibitor count fell an estimated 25% to 300+ from 400+ in 2025.
The last sub-20,000 GDC was 2011, which logged 19,000 attendees.
GDC organizers have set the 2027 dates for March 1-5.
Gamescom's 2025 edition drew 34,000 trade visitors and 1,500+ exhibitors, surpassing GDC.
GDC 2026 drew 20,000 attendees, down roughly a third from the prior year's edition, as organizers rebranded the 36-year-old industry conference under a "Festival of Gaming" banner and shuttered the North Hall expo area for the first time in over a decade.
How much smaller did the show actually get?
The headline figure matches 2011 levels, the last time the conference hosted fewer than 20,000 visitors. The 2022 pandemic hybrid drew 12,000 in-person and 5,000 online attendees; every edition from 2013 through 2025 sat above the 20,000 line.
Organizers reported 1,100 speakers across 700+ sessions and representation from 85+ countries, the first time that count has been disclosed in at least 15 years.
On the floor, the contraction was sharper in percentage terms. The 300+ exhibitors logged this year represent an estimated 25% drop from the 400+ figure posted in 2025 — the lowest count since 2012, excluding 2022. The North Hall, previously used for developer showcases, meeting booths and communal seating, did not open at all.
What is driving the structural decline?
Five pressures converged on this year's edition. Mass industry layoffs, with over half of recent cuts concentrated in California, thinned both the attendee and sponsor pools. The current US administration's visa requirements added friction for international visitors; one on-site reporter closed an X account as a precaution during the visa process.
US-Israeli strikes on Iran closed regional airspace in the run-up to the show, blocking most Middle East attendees. Competitive pressure has intensified as well. Gamescom's B2B and B2C expo drew 34,000 trade visitors and 1,500+ exhibitors in 2025, both figures north of GDC's.
Web3 and blockchain sponsors that anchored large stands in recent years have largely exited. Unity, Unreal and other legacy floor anchors have reduced or ended their expo presence. San Francisco itself remains unpopular among visitors weary of cost, logistics and the pandemic-era shift in the city's center of gravity.
What still worked at the show?
Sessions held up. The 700+ talks this year sit slightly below prior editions, but capacity was reached in several rooms during the Luminaries Speaker Series at YBCA. Other talks in the same theatre ran largely empty, a reminder that programming depth varies by room.
Attendees described meetings on the floor as productive. Surrounding hotels — the W and Marriott Marquis — felt noticeably quieter than in prior years, with fewer mid-show foot traffic and after-hours bar business reported by staff.
What changes for studios eyeing 2027?
GDC organizers have already set the 2027 dates for March 1-5. The pivotal question is exhibitor recovery: if booth sales don't return, the floor area that anchors much of the conference's profitability could follow the path of the now-defunct GDC Europe, which declined booth-by-booth over several years before shutting.
The Festival of Gaming rebrand at least signals acknowledgement of the structural problems, though on-site observers found its execution muddled. For studios budgeting next year's calendar, the 2027 edition will offer the first clean read on whether the 2026 drop is structural or a one-year correction tied to layoffs and visa friction.
