The Witcher 3 tops 120,000 Steam concurrents after free remaster

The Witcher 3 surpassed 120,000 concurrent Steam players after CD Projekt Red's free Remastered launch, breaking the 103,000 record set during the 2020 Netflix boom.

Patch notes

  • The Witcher 3 passed 120,000 concurrent Steam players after the free Remastered release, an all-time record for the game

  • Previous peaks: 92,000 at the 2015 launch, 103,000 in January 2020 during the Netflix adaptation's popularity, and 89,000 in December 2022 with the next-gen update

  • The Remastered edition is free for existing owners, includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and brings graphics and gameplay improvements

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has passed 120,000 concurrent players on Steam — the highest figure in the game's history — after CD Projekt Red released a free Remastered edition for existing owners.

The surge places the 2015 role-playing game just outside Steam's top ten most-played titles over the past 24 hours, a remarkable position for a single-player release a decade after its original launch.

Data from SteamDB shows the new peak comfortably clears every previous record in the game's history. The Witcher 3 launched with a maximum of 92,000 concurrent players in 2015. The Netflix adaptation of the saga drove a then-record 103,000 peak in January 2020, and the next-gen update in December 2022 lifted the game to 89,000 concurrents.

The remaster has now beaten all three milestones at once.

What players are getting

CD Projekt Red shipped the Remastered version as a free update rather than a paid re-release. It bundles the base game with both major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and delivers improvements to graphics and gameplay.

The free upgrade path matters for the scale of the player spike: existing owners on any platform had no purchase barrier to returning, and the launch effectively functioned as a re-release marketing event without cannibalizing the installed base.

The current numbers also understate total engagement. They exclude players on GOG — CD Projekt Red's own storefront — the Epic Games Store, and console audiences on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch 2.

A transmedia flywheel that keeps turning

The record continues a pattern that has defined The Witcher 3's commercial life: external media events reliably re-energize the game's player base. The 2020 Netflix-driven peak was the first proof; the remaster launch is the latest.

Netflix announced earlier this year that the show's fifth season will conclude its run, which will eventually remove one of the franchise's recurring engagement drivers. For now, though, the combination of a zero-cost upgraded product and sustained brand visibility is delivering the strongest Steam performance the title has ever recorded.

For CD Projekt Red, the data point validates the long-tail strategy the studio has run on The Witcher 3 since launch: successive free and discounted updates that convert brand moments into player activity years after release.

Whether the 120,000-plus peak holds as a durable baseline or decays to prior levels over the coming weeks will be the metric to watch on SteamDB.
