Patch notes

  • Sony Interactive Entertainment will end PlayStation disc production starting January 2028.

  • Roughly 80% of PS4 and PS5 game purchases last financial year were digital, per Game File.

  • Sony reportedly sent developers its biggest survey ever, indirectly asking about killing discs.

  • Iam8bit, Lost in Cult and PM Studios publicly criticized the disc phase-out decision.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has sent developers one of its largest surveys ever — reportedly its biggest "if not ever before" — asking, indirectly, for feedback on killing physical discs, according to YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead as reported by Eurogamer.

"There is a survey Sony sent out to developers – [that's] what I was told by my contacts – that is a bigger survey than they've sent almost ever before, if not ever before," Moore's Law is Dead host Tom said.

"And there was a question in it basically trying to ask in a not direct way: is there any issue with how we sell games physically, or something – asking developers for feedback on killing discs."

Why is Sony asking now?

The survey follows Sony's July announcement that PlayStation will end disc production starting in January 2028. At the time, SIE framed the move as a response to buying habits rather than a cost decision.

"This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs," the company wrote.

"This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today."

The data supports that framing. According to Game File, four-fifths of games purchased on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in the last financial year were bought digitally.

What does the change mean for studios and partners?

For most publishers, the operational impact is limited: digital already dominates sales on the platform. The harder hit falls on businesses built around physical product.

Premium collector's edition specialist Iam8bit told GamesIndustry.biz it was "profoundly disappointed" by the move. Lost in Cult said it was "deeply saddened" by the decision. PM Studios' Michael Yum called the shift "sad and devastating."

The indirection of the survey question is notable. Sony is not asking whether to reverse course — production is already scheduled to end — but whether the way it sells physical games presents problems. That leaves room for adjustments to the transition, not a walk-back of the policy itself.

For developers weighing physical editions, retail distribution, or collector partnerships in the 2027–2028 window, the timeline is now concrete: disc production stops from January 2028, meaning physical SKUs planned for launch near that date carry scheduling risk.

The scope of the survey — described as unprecedented by the report's sources — signals Sony expects meaningful developer friction and is collecting structured feedback before the cutoff. How that feedback shapes the final transition, if at all, is worth watching as the January 2028 date approaches.
