Lego Digital Play has acquired Offroad Games, a UK mobile studio founded 19 months ago by former Space Ape Games developers, with financial terms undisclosed.

Offroad announced the deal in a LinkedIn post, describing the acquisition as "an incredibly exciting new chapter" for the studio. Neither party has detailed how Offroad will operate within Lego Digital Play going forward — whether the team will retain its own projects or fold into existing Lego mobile development remains unclear.

The studio spun out of Space Ape Games in March 2025. In its statement, Offroad said it has spent the intervening months building a team focused on mobile.

"We started this company 19 months ago, and since then we've worked tirelessly to build a game studio with the right culture, skills and energy to develop a new generation of mobile games," Offroad wrote.

The studio also thanked the backers who supported it through the spinout, along with its own team and its new parent. "A huge thank you to the Offroad team. You're all superstars," the statement read.

"I also want to thank everyone who's supported us in getting this far. The people who believed in us when we spun out of Space Ape Games, the people who made the journey enjoyable through all its ups and downs, and everyone at Lego Digital Play for making us feel incredibly welcome."

For Lego, the deal adds a small, mobile-focused team with direct experience shipping free-to-play titles to a digital arm that has been steadily expanding the company's presence in games. Offroad's founders built their track record at Space Ape Games, the London studio behind titles including Samurai Siege and Transformers: Earth Wars before its own acquisition by Supercell in 2021.

The acquisition fits a broader pattern of established toy and entertainment brands buying mobile development capacity outright rather than licensing IP to third-party studios. Owning teams in-house gives Lego tighter control over its mobile pipeline and shortens the path from prototype to release.

For Offroad, the deal provides corporate backing 19 months into the studio's life — a point at which many independent mobile developers face pressure to secure funding or publish through a partner. The studio did not say whether its existing projects will continue under Lego Digital Play or pivot to Lego-branded titles.

What to watch: whether Offroad retains its own game slate or redirects its team toward Lego intellectual property, and whether Lego Digital Play signals further studio acquisitions as it builds out its internal development capacity.
