Godot overtakes Unity at GMTK Game Jam 2026 with 47% share
Godot powered 47% of submissions at GMTK Game Jam 2026 — roughly 4,900 games — ending Unity's nine-year run as the event's leading engine. Unity placed second at 34%, with GameMaker and Unreal trailing in single digits.

GameMaker took 5% (498 games) and Unreal Engine 3% (319 games)
Godot's share at GMTK has risen from 16% in 2022 to 47% in 2026

Godot powered 47% of submissions at GMTK Game Jam 2026 — roughly 4,900 games — overtaking Unity as the most popular engine at the annual event for the first time, the jam's organizers reported.
The result ends a nine-year streak in which Unity had led engine usage at GMTK. Unity finished second with 34% of submissions, or about 3,600 games, extending a multi-year slide in share.
GameMaker took third at 5% (498 games) and Unreal Engine fourth at 3% (319 games); both figures are consistent with recent editions of the event, organizers said.
How has Godot's share grown at GMTK?
Godot's climb to the top of the leaderboard has played out across five years:
- 2022 — 16%
- 2023 — 19%
- 2024 — 37%
- 2025 — 39%
- 2026 — 47%
The largest single-year jump landed between the 2023 and 2024 editions, when Godot's share nearly doubled from 19% to 37% — an 18-point gain in one jam cycle. Growth has continued at a slower pace since, adding roughly eight percentage points across the last two jams.
What happened to Unity's jam dominance?
Unity had finished first at every GMTK jam from 2017 through 2025, according to organizers. Its 34% share is the first data point of its post-dominance era and leaves the engine 13 points behind Godot. Whether Unity can reclaim the top spot at future editions remains an open question the 2027 results will help answer.
Does the trend extend beyond jams?
Godot Foundation board member Clay John noted that more Godot-built games ship on Steam and itch.io each year — evidence that the engine's momentum extends beyond time-limited jam-format productions. John described the rising jam share as consistent with a broader release-pipeline shift across indie channels, framing GMTK's dataset as one indicator of a wider pattern rather than an outlier event.
For studios and tooling providers, jam-circuit preferences are now catching up to the platform-distribution reality rather than diverging from it. If jam results are a leading indicator for first-time developers moving into commercial work, the dataset carries predictive weight for engine market share over the next several years.
What to watch next
GMTK organizers have not yet announced the 2027 jam date. Two signals from that edition will clarify the trajectory: whether Unity stabilizes at 34% or falls further, and whether Godot crosses the 50% threshold — a benchmark that would entrench the engine as the default for hobbyist and jam-scale builds.
Two variables sit outside the 2026 GMTK dataset. The first is the volume of Godot-built releases on Steam and itch.io through year-end. John has tied the two data points together in prior commentary, and the platform-side numbers will clarify whether the 47% headline reflects adoption momentum among the next generation of commercial developers or jam-format preferences that do not carry over.
