GDC 2027 cuts to four days, March 1-4, to sharpen focus
GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 drops to four days, March 1-4, concentrating programming and adding an all-week Business Hall at Moscone West. GDCA opens direct submissions until November 1, 2026.

GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 will run four days instead of five, Monday March 1 through Thursday March 4, organisers confirmed. The change is, in their words, "a deliberate step toward creating a higher quality, more focused and valuable experience" for attendees.
That's the headline. Behind it sits a straightforward operational bet: compress the week, pack the days people actually show up for, and cut the dead air. One fewer day means one fewer hotel night per attendee — real money when San Francisco in March already strains travel budgets.
Why shrink the biggest week in game development?
Because the data said so. "Having explored the data and listened to our community, we're concentrating programming and opportunities during the days when the community is most active, while making it easier for attendees to balance their time at GDC with their professional and personal commitments," organisers said.
In practice, the 2027 edition promises:
- Robust conference programming across all four days
- Larger session rooms
- More hands-on workshops
- Interactive experiences
- Expanded networking
The new Business Hall at Moscone West and all conference programming will run the full four days. Festival Hall at Moscone South opens later, Tuesday through Thursday — a scheduling asymmetry that quietly tells exhibitors which floors the organisers expect to draw early-week traffic.
What does this change for studios?
Planning, mostly. Teams booking meetings, booth staffing and travel can now anchor around a Monday-to-Thursday spine, with the trade-show floor live from Tuesday. The Business Hall — announced earlier this year alongside new passes and enhancements to established programming such as the GDC Summit — gets maximum runway, running every day of the show.
GDC VP of content strategy Mark DeLoura previously explained the philosophy to GamesIndustry.biz: "After introducing the Festival of Gaming and making significant changes to the GDC experience in 2026, it was especially important that we listen closely to what worked, what could work better, and how people want to participate in GDC going forward."
He added: "GDC 2027 is about giving people more choices in how they participate at the show, making the week work better for the way the industry uses GDC today. The changes are about making the event more accessible, making it easier to make meaningful connections and accomplish what you came to GDC to do."
The shortened format follows the 2026 restructure that split the show into the Festival of Gaming concept with the new Business Hall — an effort to separate deal-making from consumer-facing spectacle.
GDCA opens submissions to publishers and developers
Separately, the Game Developers Choice Awards announced it will accept submissions directly from publishers and developers for the first time. The awards previously relied solely on a nomination-based voting system through the International Choice Awards Network.
Eligibility covers games released on PC or console between January 1 and December 31, 2026. The submission deadline is November 1, 2026 — roughly six weeks out for studios weighing whether to put a December release forward.
For smaller teams without awards-campaign infrastructure, direct submission removes a gatekeeping layer that historically favoured studios already on the International Choice Awards Network's radar.
What to watch
The real test arrives in March 2027: whether a four-day format with a full-week Business Hall lifts exhibitor and attendee satisfaction, or simply squeezes the same logistics into less calendar. Registration details and pass pricing for the new structure are the next signal worth watching before booking opens.
