GDCA 2027 opens submissions to devs and publishers, drops nominations-only model

GDCA 2027 drops its nominations-only model and lets devs and publishers submit games directly — free entry, November 1 deadline, two new categories, winners announced March 2 at GDC.

Patch notes

  • GDCA 2027 accepts direct submissions from developers and publishers for the first time; entry is free and the deadline is November 1, 2026.

  • Eligible games must have launched on PC or console between January 1 and December 31, 2026, and must be submitted to be considered.

  • The previous system relied on nominations from ICAN, an invitation-only panel of over 500 industry members.

  • Two new categories debut: Best Game Launch and Best Gaming Tech.

  • Winners will be announced at the GDCA ceremony on Tuesday, March 2, 2027, at the GDC Festival of Gaming.

The Game Developers Choice Awards will accept direct submissions from developers and publishers for the first time in 2027, ending the awards' reliance on a closed nominations process. Games released on PC or console between January 1 and December 31, 2026, are eligible — but only if someone submits them. No submission, no consideration.

The deadline is November 1, 2026, and entry is free. That last detail matters: no entry fees means no budget argument against submitting, which effectively shifts the burden onto studios' internal calendar discipline rather than their marketing spend.

What changes for studios?

Previously, GDCA recognition ran through the International Choice Awards Network (ICAN), an invitation-only panel of more than 500 creators, developers and industry members who generated the nominations. If your game wasn't on ICAN's radar, it wasn't on the ballot. Now the front door is open to anyone who shipped on PC or console within the eligibility window.

The practical consequence is straightforward. Small teams without publisher PR machinery no longer depend on organic discovery by a 500-plus person panel. They can file their own paperwork and get in the room.

Two new categories

GDCA 2027 also adds a pair of awards:

  • Best Game Launch — a category that, by its name, rewards execution at release rather than long-tail redemption arcs.
  • Best Gaming Tech — recognition for the underlying tools and technology, a slot where engine advances and hardware-adjacent work can land.

Winners will be announced at the 2027 GDCA ceremony on Tuesday, March 2, at the GDC Festival of Gaming.

Part of a broader GDC overhaul

The awards shift isn't happening in isolation. Earlier this year, the GDC Festival of Gaming announced structural changes for 2027, including a new Business Hall at Moscone West. The event is also introducing three new pass types, with dedicated options for indie developers and start-ups, plus a revised schedule for the week.

GDC VP of content strategy Mark DeLoura framed the reasoning in earlier remarks to GamesIndustry.biz: "GDC 2027 is about giving people more choices in how they participate at the show, making the week work better for the way the industry uses GDC today."

He added: "The changes are about making the event more accessible, making it easier to make meaningful connections and accomplish what you came to GDC to do."

Access, in other words, is the throughline — from passes to submissions. The ICAN panel doesn't disappear as a voting body, but its gatekeeping role over the entry pipeline does.

The watch item

The submission window closes November 1, 2026 — roughly two months before the eligibility period itself ends. Studios shipping a Q4 2026 title will want to check whether the deadline covers their launch window or forces an early call. That fine print is worth reading before someone's release-day pivot becomes an awards-season absence.

How many submissions the open model draws in its first year, and whether the ICAN electorate's shortlists change character as a result, is the signal to watch when finalists surface ahead of March 2.
