U.S. consumer spending on video games, hardware and accessories fell 9% year-over-year in August to $4.26 billion, according to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, even as six new releases landed in the monthly top 10 paid games chart.
What did Americans actually buy in August?
Software led the decline. Spending on video game content dropped 10% to $3.78 billion, the steepest contraction of the three categories Circana tracks. Console and accessory hardware fell 3% to $302 million. Accessories alone bucked the trend, rising 3% to $176 million.
Physical software was the singular bright spot. Piscatella flagged $738 million in physical game sales for August, up 5% year-over-year. That growth ran on a single product line: key cartridges for Nintendo's Switch 2, where spending surged 631%. Revenue from discs and standard cartridges outside of Switch 2 keys moved in the opposite direction.
How bad was the hardware picture?
Hardware unit sales totaled 559,000 in August, the worst August on record since 2013, when the U.S. market cleared just 423,000 units. Dollar sales of Xbox Series consoles and Switch 2 hardware both dropped 13% year-over-year, while PS5 hardware sales rose 17%. Switch 2 still led the console field in both units and dollars for the month. The DualSense Midnight Black controller posted the highest dollar sales among accessories.
Which titles carried the chart?
NBA 2K27 took the No. 1 paid-games position despite a full retail release scheduled for September 4, after premium edition owners received early access at the end of August. EA Sports Madden NFL 27 debuted at No. 2, followed by Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls at No. 3, the EA Sports Kickoff Bundle at No. 4, and Star Wars Zero Company at No. 5. Big Walk entered at No. 8 to round out the six August new releases in the top 10.
Halo: Campaign Evolved held at No. 6. Elden Ring jumped 34 places to No. 7. Mario Kart World climbed ten spots to No. 9. Splatoon Raiders slipped three positions to No. 10.
Digital sales data for titles marked with a caret in Circana's chart was supplied directly by publishers; titles marked with an asterisk rely on Circana's digital forecast.
What does this signal for studios and publishers?
A 10% drop in content spend against a slate heavy with marquee new releases suggests studios entering the holiday window face a tougher sell than the launch calendar implies. The Switch 2 key-cartridge category — which did not exist before the console's launch — continues to reshape the physical revenue mix, with the 631% surge illustrating how a single platform-specific SKU can mask declines across the rest of the disc and cartridge base. With hardware units running near a 13-year low, the U.S. install base for Q4 attach looks thinner than 2025.
What to watch next
Piscatella's August readout arrived roughly two weeks later than the usual cadence, a delay Circana has not publicly addressed. September's data will land just before the holiday marketing window opens, and how the Switch 2 key-cartridge category behaves once launch-window demand normalizes is the swing factor worth monitoring.
