Newzoo projects global games revenue at $213.9 billion in 2026, a 6.1% year-over-year increase that holds across mobile, console, and PC. The figure, drawn from the research firm's Free Global Games Market Report 2026 previewed this week, marks a continuation of mid-single-digit growth even as the player base approaches saturation.

The forecast, authored by Principal Games Market Analyst Michiel Buijsman, places mobile at $121.1 billion (+6.8% YoY), console at $46.9 billion (+5.1%), and PC at $45.9 billion (+5.3%). China and the United States together account for 52% of consumer spending on games this year.

What is driving mobile ahead of console and PC?

Mobile retains its lead by a wide margin. Downloads continue to fall, but per-player spending, Chinese publishers' overseas expansion, and direct-to-consumer channels carry the 6.8% expansion, the highest growth rate of any platform.

  • Mobile 2026: $121.1B (+6.8% YoY)
  • Console 2026: $46.9B (+5.1% YoY)
  • PC 2026: $45.9B (+5.3% YoY)

Why does console still matter with GTA VI on the horizon?

Newzoo expects the November launch of Grand Theft Auto VI to lift full-game console spending by 17.5%, the strongest growth rate among business models tracked in the report. Multi-game subscriptions and higher game and service prices compound the lift.

Component and memory cost inflation cuts the other way, squeezing margins across all hardware platforms. Newzoo flags rising memory and component costs as a shared headwind for 2026.

How is PC growth shifting this year?

PC's 5.3% expansion represents a sharp moderation from 2025's 12.0%, the highest annual rate in Newzoo's dataset. Microtransactions are projected to reclaim the top business-model position, while premium and mid-priced releases sustain full-game revenue.

Asia-Pacific drives regional growth, with Latin America and MEA posting faster expansion. North America and Europe advance more slowly.

Where does the player base go from here?

Global players reach 3.7 billion in 2026, up 4.4% year over year. Growth slows to a 3.2% CAGR through 2029, ending at 4.07 billion players.

Penetration edges from 61.5% to 62.0% of the online population, a ceiling that effectively closes off raw acquisition as a growth lever. The online population itself grows to 5.97 billion (+3.5% YoY).

What does this mean for studios and publishers?

Future revenue depends on retaining and monetizing existing audiences rather than signing up new ones, Buijsman writes. Emerging markets concentrate player-side growth, with Asia-Pacific the largest region and MEA the fastest-growing. North America and Europe lag behind.

The structural shift reshapes publisher priorities. Live-service design, subscription packaging, and direct-to-consumer storefronts gain weight, while ad-driven user acquisition in mobile faces a harder pricing environment abroad.
