Meta sets VR Glasses at $1,299.99, launches Horizon Create and Studio AI tools

Meta will release VR Glasses in Spring 2027 at $1,299.99 with day-one Unity 6.6 support, alongside Horizon Create and Studio AI game-making tools for mobile and browsers.

Patch notes

  • Meta's VR Glasses will retail at $1,299.99 and ship in Spring 2027 with Unity 6.6 support on day one

  • Eight named studios — Animal Repair Shop, Schell Games, Amata K.K., Nerd Ninjas, Within, Soul Assembly, Marvelous Inc., and Grounding Inc. — are building titles for the device

  • Horizon Create (mobile) and Horizon Studio (browser) share a common backend built on the Meta Horizon Engine

  • Selected creators are testing both AI tools with financial backing from the Meta Horizon Creator Fund, per MobileGamer.biz

  • VR Glasses are five times lighter than the Quest 3 and feature a 5K micro-OLED display with no straps

Meta will release VR Glasses in Spring 2027 at $1,299.99 with day-one Unity 6.6 support via OpenXR, the company confirmed at its Meta Connect conference this week.

The hardware drops straps and heavy chassis for a glasses form factor, weighs roughly one-fifth as much as the Meta Quest 3, and runs a 5K infinite display built on micro-OLED panels. Backwards compatibility flows through OpenXR, so studios can transfer existing Quest projects into the new build target without engine forks. Unity's XR Interaction (XRI) Toolkit, XR Hands and XRI Simulator are supported out of the box for design, build and test workflows.

At least eight studios are already developing titles for the device: Animal Repair Shop, Schell Games, Amata K.K., Nerd Ninjas, Within, Soul Assembly, Marvelous Inc., and Grounding Inc. Their pipelines will set the early software slate for a headset Meta is positioning in the premium under-$1,500 tier, well above the Quest 3's $499.99 launch price.

What does the $1,299.99 price do to Meta's hardware pitch?

The figure positions VR Glasses as a premium consumer accessory rather than a Quest successor. For studios, that segmentation matters: any title targeting the device must clear a four-figure hardware hurdle, which historically limits install bases and lengthens payback periods for first-party content. Unity support should reduce port friction, but marketing budgets and content calendars will need to absorb a smaller paying audience.

What are Horizon Create and Horizon Studio?

Alongside the hardware, Meta unveiled two AI-powered creation tools built on the agentic capabilities of the Meta Horizon Engine. Horizon Create targets mobile devices and Horizon Studio runs in browsers; both share a common backend, so assets, systems and iteration history transfer between them.

Creators feed the system text prompts describing a desired 2D or 3D game. The Meta Horizon Engine returns a playable build, which can be published directly to Facebook and Instagram without leaving the tool.

"Traditional game development demands months of work, expensive hardware, and specialised skills," Meta said in its announcement. "Horizon Create and Horizon Studio remove these barriers: they make it easier to turn your ideas into playable 2D and 3D games, and they enable you to distribute them automatically across several Meta platforms when you publish."

Selected creators are currently testing both apps with financial backing from the Meta Horizon Creator Fund, according to MobileGamer.biz. Early access will roll out gradually. Meta has not yet disclosed in-game monetisation terms or revenue-share mechanics—a gap that will determine how attractive the platform is to working developers rather than hobbyists.

How does this compare with Roblox's agentic tooling?

Earlier in 2025, Roblox added an agentic AI assistant inside Roblox Studio that converts text prompts into design documents before implementation and testing. Meta's agentic approach goes further on distribution, since generated games land directly on Facebook and Instagram—two audiences Meta has been courting for years.

Neither stack ships finished products. Agentic tools can scaffold mechanics, levels and assets, but audio, narrative, balance and QA still demand human work. Studios adopting either pipeline should expect productivity gains at the prototype stage and limited impact on production-grade titles.

What changes for studios and developers?

For Unity-based teams, the VR Glasses launch adds another OpenXR-compliant target at no migration cost for engine versions 6.6 and above. Production pipelines shipping to Quest 3 today can extend to VR Glasses by toggling a build target and rerunning XRI tests. For smaller teams or solo creators, Horizon Create and Horizon Studio collapse prototyping cost into a text prompt, though every dollar earned now depends on Meta's still-unannounced monetisation rules.

Watch for Meta's in-game monetisation announcement and the first VR Glasses title reveals from the eight confirmed launch partners as the next concrete signals.
