Gothic 1 Remake Nears Break-Even as Embracer Reports 500K Launch Sales
Embracer Group says Gothic 1 Remake has nearly recouped development and marketing costs, with 500,000 copies sold in launch week and $21.5M estimated on Steam.

Patch notes
Gothic 1 Remake sold over 500,000 copies in its debut week, per Embracer Group.
Steam version has grossed an estimated $21.5 million before commissions and taxes, per Gamalytic.
The game launched June 5, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
Embracer Group says the remake is approaching break-even and expects profitability soon.
Neither the budget nor total cross-platform revenue has been disclosed.
Gothic 1 Remake has nearly recouped its full development and marketing costs, according to a financial report from Embracer Group, the parent company of publisher THQ Nordic — less than a month after the game launched on June 5, 2026.
Embracer did not disclose the remake's budget or its cumulative revenue. It confirmed one hard number: the game sold more than 500,000 copies during its debut week across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
For Alkimia Interactive, the Barcelona-based studio that built the remake, the report marks a significant validation. The studio set out to modernize Piranha Bytes' 2001 cult RPG for current hardware, and the commercial reception now positions the project to move from break-even into profitability in the near term, per Embracer's own assessment.
How much has Gothic 1 Remake actually earned?
Third-party estimates fill in part of the picture. Analytics service Gamalytic estimates the Steam version alone has generated $21.5 million in gross revenue to date — a figure calculated before platform commissions and taxes are deducted.
That estimate covers only the PC version sold through Valve's storefront. Console sales on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series sit on top of the Steam figure, meaning total gross revenue across all platforms is higher, though no exact consolidated number has been published.
The distinction matters for anyone benchmarking the remake's performance. A $21.5 million gross on Steam typically translates to a meaningfully lower net figure once Valve's standard cut and regional taxes apply, so break-even claims from Embracer rest on the publisher's internal accounting rather than on the Gamalytic estimate alone.
What changes for Embracer and THQ Nordic?
For Embracer Group, the remake's fast approach to profitability adds a data point to a portfolio strategy the company has leaned on since its restructuring: monetizing established back-catalog IP through remakes and remasters at controlled budgets. Gothic, a German-developed property with a devoted European fanbase, fits that model — nostalgic demand converted into half a million launch-week sales without a AAA-scale marketing spend being publicly disclosed.
For THQ Nordic, the result strengthens the case for similar treatment of other legacy RPG franchises in its catalog. The publisher has historically greenlit remakes of mid-2000s titles such as Destroy All Humans! and SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom — Bottom's remake itself crossed break-even rapidly — and Gothic 1 Remake now extends that pattern into the classic CRPG space.
For Alkimia Interactive, the commercial performance secures the studio's standing within Embracer's ecosystem after years of development on a single title. A profitable first release materially improves the odds of follow-up work, whether that is post-launch support for the remake or a potential remake of Gothic II, which THQ Nordic has not announced.
Why launch-week sell-through matters here
The 500,000-copy debut week is the strongest signal in the report. Front-loaded sales of that scale indicate the remake reached beyond the original's aging fanbase — or that the fanbase itself was larger and more purchase-ready than mid-tier expectations assumed.
It also demonstrates continued demand for full-priced remakes of 2000s-era European RPGs, a niche that sat between AAA blockbuster budgets and indie production values. Whether that demand extends to sequels or to other Piranha Bytes-derived properties, including the Risen series, remains an open commercial question.
Embracer has not said when it expects Gothic 1 Remake to cross fully into profit, only that it expects profitability soon. The company's next quarterly report should reveal whether the title has cleared that line — and whether THQ Nordic commits to remaking the rest of the trilogy.
