Google Play's You tab has passed 250 million monthly active users, and the platform now connects more than 700 million gamer profiles — figures Google disclosed as it rolled out Game Finder, Sprints and Sidekick Playbacks in a discovery and social push announced in a blog post from Google Play vice president and general manager Sam Bright, alongside a separate developer post.

Game Finder suggests titles based on a player's tastes, habits and community reviews, and shows why each pick was made. It starts in the US for English-language users. Other markets follow.

Sprints run 48 hours and match small groups of players with similar skill levels. Playbacks let Sidekick users capture 30-second clips and send them to friends without leaving the game. Google said Sidekick has reached more than 285 million users.

What changes for studios?

Quests will start offering in-game items — skins, boosters — not just Play Points. That's a direct monetization hook studios can attach to Google's engagement loops rather than relying on the points economy alone.

The other operational changes:

  • Game Playlists arrive for curating game collections.
  • PC titles including Dave the Diver and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun come to Play, with cloud save across Android and PC.
  • Game Trials, which let players sample premium games before buying, move from mobile to PC.

Developers opt in through two mechanisms. Game Stats unlocks daily Streaks plus eligibility for Leagues and Sprints. Play Games Rewards ties in-game rewards to Play Points.

The fee lever

Google's Apps Experience and Level Up programs give standout titles lower service fees. Both cover the US, UK, EEA, Japan and Australia, with Korea due before year-end.

Google offered a concrete benchmark: PUBG Mobile, which integrated the Level Up guidelines, saw new installs from high-value players rise 22% and spend per buyer among engaged players climb 62%.

AI installs

Play in Gemini has generated more than 6 million app installs since launching two months ago, Google said, and will reach all Gemini users soon. For studios weighing discovery spend, that's a new install channel growing inside Google's assistant surface.

What does this change for businesses? Studios that integrate Google's engagement programs early get two things: cheaper distribution through reduced service fees, and rewarded Quests that tie acquisition to in-game spend rather than points. Those that don't still face the discovery features — but pay full fees.

Google Play announced a batch of PC and mobile discoverability and purchase features back in March. This week's additions extend that roadmap into social and competitive loops.

Watch Korea's entry into Apps Experience and Level Up before year-end — it's the next signal on whether lower service fees expand globally or stay a five-market test.
