Game Industry Hardship Bundle Pulls $100K as Xbox Cuts 3,200 Jobs
Necrosoft Games' Brandon Sheffield's itch.io relief bundle cleared $100,000 in four days for the UVW-CWA Hardship Fund, which opened July 1 as Microsoft cut 3,200 Xbox jobs.
Patch notes
Microsoft announced 3,200 Xbox layoffs on July 6, 2026, with half immediate and half spread over the following year.
The itch.io Hardship Fund bundle raised more than $100,000 in its first four days after launching July 30.
The bundle runs through August 13, 2026, with 100% of proceeds routed to the UVW-CWA Hardship Fund.
UVW-CWA was founded in 2025; Hardship Fund applications have slightly outpaced the union's projections.
Ivy Road, developer of Wanderstop, shut down in March 2026 after failing to secure funding for its next project.
An itch.io fundraising bundle launched July 30 by Necrosoft Games director Brandon Sheffield has pulled in more than $100,000 in four days for the United Videogame Workers-CWA Hardship Fund, the mutual aid vehicle the labor organization opened July 1 to support workers displaced by industry contraction.
The proceeds arrive against a backdrop of accelerating cuts. On July 6, Microsoft announced 3,200 layoffs across its Xbox division, with half effective immediately and the remainder scheduled over the following year. UVW treasurer Sherveen Uduwana said the Xbox announcement exceeded the union's planning assumptions.
"We did not know for sure the actual scale of the Xbox layoffs," Uduwana said. "It ended up being a lot bigger than we were planning." Applications to receive funds from the Hardship Fund have slightly outpaced the union's projections as a result.
What does the Hardship Fund actually do?
The Hardship Fund distributes direct cash assistance to game workers who have lost employment. UVW-CWA, founded in 2025 and affiliated with the Communications Workers of America, positioned its launch at the start of July because the fiscal-year rollover has historically produced fresh layoff waves.
"Seeing the layoffs happening year after year, and coupling that with the positive news of union organizing, there's a bittersweet element," Uduwana said. "The workers that are getting laid off are often not immediately benefiting from that. And I hadn't been seeing a short-term solution for people that are immediately impacted."
Why an itch.io bundle?
Sheffield, who runs Necrosoft Games out of Oakland and previously organized the Bundle for Ukraine and the California Fire Relief Bundle, said UVW approached him in 2025. He held off until Uduwana shepherded a smaller hardship effort through the Game Devs of Color Expo.
"All I needed to know was that they could do it," Sheffield said. The current bundle, available through August 13, routes 100% of proceeds to the Hardship Fund.
What's slowing participation?
Sheffield flagged an unexpected response pattern from contributors. "I think game developers were less excited about this one," he said. "It is an interesting scenario because we have indie developers essentially supporting larger game developers that have been let go. That really was unusual."
The dynamic reflects a thinner donor base than prior relief drives. Smaller studios have not escaped the contraction either. Ivy Road, the studio founded by Stanley Parable co-creator Davey Wreden, released the acclaimed Wanderstop in 2025 and shuttered in March after failing to secure funding for its next project.
Is mutual aid enough to offset the cuts?
Sheffield is skeptical that grassroots fundraising can substitute for structural support. "I think there is a lot of concern that we're passing the same $5 around," he said. "There's a lot of truth to that because not a lot of people in the creative space have money anymore."
He pointed to company-funded models such as Innersloth's Outersloth game fund as one workable alternative, and noted that other countries operate more robust public arts grant programs for game developers.
What changes for studios and teams?
Uduwana framed the Hardship Fund as proof of concept rather than a permanent fix. "One of the key elements of our strategy is showing what is possible through organizing," he said. "The Hardship Fund is a great example."
Longer term, he tied the current effort to a push for stronger union density. "What's being built right now is definitely going to be in the DNA of what the games worker movement looks like in 10 years," Uduwana said.
Sheffield offered a more operational takeaway for displaced developers. "People want to make things, and they will make things if their bills are paid. That's all that's really required for people to make art."
The itch.io bundle closes August 13. Watchers will be tracking whether applications to the Hardship Fund continue to track ahead of UVW's second-half projections, and whether additional publishers follow Innersloth's grant-style model in the back half of 2026.
