FIRY exits Exit Games for $55m cash, returns 1.1x on 2021 bet
FIRY sold its 10.5% stake in Exit Games for $55m cash, closing October 2, 2026 at roughly 1.1x its July 2021 investment. The Hamburg-based Photon developer now returns to founder control.

Patch notes
FIRY sold its full 10.5% stake in Exit Games for $55 million in cash, closing October 2, 2026.
The exit returns roughly 1.1x FIRY's original $50 million investment made in July 2021 under its former name Skillz Inc.
CEO Andrew Paradise tied the deal to 2021-vintage underperformance, noting the average 2021 fund has distributed five cents on the dollar.
Exit Games is the Hamburg-based developer of Photon, the cross-engine multiplayer networking middleware.
Photon powers thousands of games including Stumble Guys.
FIRY has sold its entire 10.5% stake in Hamburg-based Exit Games for $55 million in cash, closing on October 2, 2026 at roughly 1.1x its original $50 million investment in July 2021.
The exit closes out FIRY's only disclosed position in the developer of Photon, the cross-engine multiplayer networking middleware embedded in thousands of games.
What does the $55m sale actually change?
For FIRY, the deal delivers a fully realised cash exit from a 2021 venture bet. The company, formerly known as Skillz Inc., originally wrote a $50m check into Exit Games in July 2021, ahead of the broader mobile-gaming reset that pulled 2021-vintage marks underwater.
For Exit Games, full operational and equity control returns to founders and management, with no residual exposure to a publicly reporting parent.
Why does a 1.1x return register as outperformance?
Paradise anchored the deal against the broader 2021 venture vintage, which has broadly failed to return capital to LPs.
"Five years later, the average 2021-vintage fund has distributed five cents on the dollar, and most of that vintage is still sitting in illiquid marks," Paradise said. "We are exiting in cash and above our purchase price."
That framing positions FIRY's outcome as outperformance in a vintage where flat or underwater exits dominate. The same logic — cash, no remaining illiquid marks, balance-sheet flexibility — is what FIRY's capital allocators will need to replicate elsewhere.
What does Photon actually do for game studios?
Photon provides multiplayer networking infrastructure spanning real-time session management, matchmaking, relay routing and room-based gameplay state across Unity, Unreal and Godot pipelines.
Exit Games built the stack in Hamburg and grew it into the networking layer underneath releases including Stumble Guys, alongside thousands of other titles across mobile and PC. The middleware sits in a category that includes the multiplayer services bundled into the major engines themselves, plus a small set of dedicated networking vendors.
FIRY's stake sale does not touch the technology itself. Photon retains its customer base, its SDK distribution, and its seat in cross-engine pipelines.
What does FIRY do with $55m in fresh cash?
Paradise did not telegraph a specific deployment but spelled out the strategic intent.
"Cash back on the balance sheet gives FIRY optionality in our other endeavours," he said. "Exit Games' management has built a great business around Photon, and we are rooting for them."
In this register, optionality typically means acquisitions, follow-on investments in existing portfolio companies, share repurchases, or simply a buffer against operating losses. FIRY did not enumerate its remaining segments in the announcement.
What's worth watching next?
Three signals will indicate whether FIRY's $55m becomes a stepping stone or sits idle:
- A follow-on filing listing FIRY's current operating segments and any new revenue lines added since the Skillz rebrand.
- A specific acquisition, minority investment, or share-repurchase announcement within the next two reporting periods.
- Any disclosure from Exit Games on Photon's commercial roadmap, particularly any shift toward enterprise or higher-margin verticals.
For now, the FIRY ledger shows what most 2021-vintage vehicles have not produced: a fully distributed cash position, a small markup, and complete optionality on what happens next.
