Discord relaunches age verification with five non-biometric options
Discord relaunched its global age verification system with five non-biometric methods, replacing the video selfie requirement. CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy leads the rollout, delayed to H2 2026.

Patch notes
Five non-biometric verification options launched: credit cards, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, and AgeKey.
Rollout postponed from March 2026 to the second half of 2026 after February backlash.
Users sorted into Adult (18+), Teen (13-17), or Unconfirmed buckets based on account age and joined servers.
Age assurance data published in the 2026 Transparency Report, including UK and Australia launches.
Verification system does not review messages, calls, or other content.
Discord has relaunched its global age verification system with five non-biometric methods, replacing the video selfie requirement that drew privacy criticism in February.
Co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy posted the update yesterday, listing credit cards, the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, and AgeKey as the new verification routes. None of the five options require a government ID or biometric scan. AgeKey does not share personal or private data.
Why did Discord delay the rollout?
In February, Discord said age verification would become a global requirement starting in March 2026. The company pushed that timeline to the second half of 2026 after users raised privacy concerns.
"By launching a global approach with non-biometric options, we're getting ahead of laws that might ask us to implement something less privacy-focused," Vishnevskiy said.
At the time of the delay, Vishnevskiy acknowledged Discord "should have provided more detail about [its] intentions and how the process works."
What does the new process actually do?
The verification system sorts users into three age groups:
- Adult (18+)
- Teen (13-17)
- Unconfirmed
New accounts land in the "Unconfirmed" bucket until Discord has enough signal to place them. The system pulls from account age and joined servers, not message or call content.
Users who skip verification keep access to Discord with restrictions. Age checks remain available in user settings at any point.
How is Discord responding to transparency demands?
The company published a full list of third-party age assurance vendors alongside the launch. Discord also disclosed its age group estimation methodology and released its first age assurance dataset inside the 2026 Transparency Report, covering the UK and Australia launches.
"Previously, I said trust is earned through actions, not posts," Vishnevskiy said. "This launch is where you hold us to that. We'll get some things wrong, but you can judge us on how we respond: how accurate the age group estimation gets, how fast we fix bad calls, and whether we keep publishing the data so you don't have to take my word for it."
What changes for studios and developers?
Game studios running official Discord servers should expect their community membership to influence how the platform categorizes users. Discord's classification uses server associations as one of its inputs, and studios shipping bots or integrations should review which age groups their features assume.
For platform teams building companion apps, the verification choice set signals where compliance pressure is heading: away from biometric checks toward account-level signals and payment-based attestation. The five options cover most payment channels a teen already uses.
What regulatory pressure drove the change?
The UK and Australia are already operating under Discord's age assurance system, with data from both featured in the 2026 Transparency Report. Vishnevskiy's comment about "laws that might ask us to implement something less privacy-focused" points at jurisdictions where biometric verification has been floated as the default.
"The decisions policymakers make now will shape how platforms advance both teen safety and privacy for years to come, and I encourage people to make their perspectives heard where they live," Vishnevskiy said.
What's next?
The revised rollout is scheduled for the second half of 2026. The next checkpoint worth tracking is the next transparency report, which will show how often AgeKey, Google Wallet, and the app-store attestations correctly place users in Adult versus Teen buckets, and how many appeals Discord processes when the system gets it wrong.
