ASGC lifts 2026 games industry layoff forecast to 14,259 jobs
The ASGC tracker raised its 2026 games industry layoff forecast to 14,259 jobs on July 26, up 381 from its July 10 estimate and 78% above January's projection of 8,025.

Patch notes
ASGC raised its 2026 layoff forecast to 14,259 on July 26, up 381 from 13,878 on July 10 and 78% above January's 8,025 estimate.
Confirmed 2026 layoffs rose to 9,781, already 584 above the 9,197 full-year total recorded for 2025.
Microsoft accounts for the largest block at roughly 4,800 global cuts announced July 6, with Xbox eliminating about 3,200 roles across fiscal 2027.
Four studio announcements, ZA/UM, 11 Bit Studios, Ubisoft Barcelona and Red Rover Interactive, accounted for up to 125 of the 381 newly added positions.
North America represents about 66% of 2026 layoff events and 79% of affected workers, with the top five events accounting for 56% of all job losses.
The ASGC Games Industry Layoffs Tracker raised its 2026 forecast to 14,259 job cuts on July 26, up 381 from the 13,878 figure it published on July 10 and roughly 78% above the 8,025 layoffs projected in January. Confirmed cuts climbed from 9,464 to 9,781, while the estimate for additional reductions between now and year-end rose from 4,414 to 4,478.
"The pace of layoffs is accelerating faster than our models initially predicted," the tracker said in its latest update. Its dataset combines publicly confirmed cuts, non-public reductions, announced future job losses and statistical forecasts, with earlier totals revised as more accurate information emerges.
Which studios drove the latest 381-role increase?
Four named announcements accounted for up to 125 positions. ZA/UM issued redundancy or at-risk notices affecting up to 32 employees after stating that the commercial performance of Zero Parades: For Dead Spies did not support retaining a studio of its previous size. Warsaw-based 11 Bit Studios announced reductions affecting 20 employees while rebalancing teams across current project phases, transferring most of those affected to internal groups and offering severance assistance.
Ubisoft opened a redundancy process covering 51 employees at its Barcelona operation following the release of Assassin's Creed Black Flag: Resynced. Red Rover Interactive planned to cut 22 positions across its Newcastle and Oslo offices while pushing the planned release of Enginefall into 2027. Remaining increases came from reported reductions and revisions to previously logged figures.
Where does Microsoft fit in the projection?
Microsoft contributes the largest single block of announced cuts in the dataset. The company confirmed roughly 4,800 global job eliminations on July 6, with most of the changes concentrated in commercial and Xbox organizations. An internal Xbox memo said the gaming division would eliminate approximately 3,200 roles across Microsoft's fiscal 2027, removing about 1,600 immediately and scheduling the remainder through the fiscal year ending June 2027.
Tracker maintainer Amir Satvat, a Tencent Games business development director, currently assigns all 1,600 remaining Xbox cuts to calendar 2026. "I currently assume all will occur in 2026 and will revise the estimate as better information becomes available," Satvat said. Any reductions Microsoft executes between January and June 2027 would fall outside the tracker's 2026 count and reduce the annual figure.
How concentrated are the cuts geographically?
North America accounts for about 66% of the 105 layoff events recorded in 2026 and roughly 79% of affected workers, with the United States representing about 48% of events and Canada about 17%. Europe contributes around 30% of recorded events. Combined, the two regions cover about 95% of both events and affected workers in the tracker.
Concentration is even sharper at the top of the distribution: the five largest layoff events account for roughly 56% of all affected workers, and the two largest alone represent approximately 44% of the year's recorded job losses.
How does 2026 compare historically?
The tracker now projects 58,087 total layoffs across the five-year 2022 to 2026 window. Recorded annual totals stand at 8,500 in 2022, 10,500 in 2023, 15,631 in 2024 and 9,197 in 2025. The current 14,259 estimate would leave 2026 about 1,372 below the 2024 peak, though confirmed cuts in 2026 have already surpassed the full-year 2025 figure by 584.
The tracker's projection implies another 4,478 industry jobs could be eliminated before the end of 2026. Watch Satvat's next revision, expected after Microsoft provides clearer timing for its remaining Xbox reductions, for the next material shift in the annual total.
